MY COMMITTMENT

Going the distance

I commit myself to running 1000 kilometers for one year over 2017/2018. Doing so I am collecting donations for the CWO Refugee School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which has insufficient funds to keep operating for much longer.

AIM OF THE PROJECT

Keep the CWO School open and running!

The Chin's Women Organisation (CWO) School in Kuala Lumpur is crucial for educating Myanma refugee children while they wait to be granted asylum in other countries. Although the school benefits from volunteers to take the role of teaching the students, there remains the issues of shortages of funding since the UN diverted its funds to other areas. The school requires RM60 000 to run per year. Here are the 3 main areas in need of support for the school:

SCHOOL BUILDING RENT

RM37 000

The school is located over four apartment units, with a combined cost of yearly rent of RM37 000. This is the biggest area in need of support for the school.

SCHOOL ACCESSORIES

RM30 per student

Being refugees who aren't officially recognised by the Malaysian government, the students' parents must often work illegally to support their family while awaiting asylum. As a result their school appliances fees such as pens, pencils, Chin-English dictionaries and textbooks must be provided.

EXCURSIONS

RM1800

The CWO School is by little means comparable to official schools, in that it relies so heavily on donations. Consequently there is little extra funding for educational trips although these would have a huge beneficial impact for the children both educationally and as a whole.

Who am I?

Hello! My name is Adrien Dorleans, I'm 17yrs old, French/Belgian and have lived in Kuala Lumpur with my family for 3 years. I started running when I was seven years old doing weekly fun runs, and am now the captain of the cross country team at ISKL (International School of KL).

Early this year I wanted to establish a year-long goal to improve my fitness while supporting a fair cause. I decided to run 1000km to raise money for the CWO School where my mum is an English teacher. I'd heard that they were struggling to pay for the school's expenses, despite selling handicrafts to raise funds.

I've ran most of my kilometres so far in Malaysia, where I run alone and with my school cross country team. This includes running from my house to Merdeka Square and back during KLcarfreemornings, running around the KDE golf course next to school, running in local races, and many more occasions.

Whenever I leave Malaysia to another colder place on holiday, running becomes my main priority because the temperature makes it so much easier to run without breaking a sweat. This way, I managed to spend my most productive week of the year - 48km in 7 days - while I was in the Netherlands!

Feel free to subscribe!

Keep updated on my progress.
